Key Russian oil refinery set ablaze after Ukraine launches overnight drone strike

A massive blaze has erupted at one of Russia’s largest oil refineries after an overnight strike by Ukrainian drones.

According to Russia’s pro-Putin media outlet Mash, the refinery in Tuapse, southeast Russia, caught fire after debris from a downed drone hit a gasoline storage tank.

Writing on Telegram, the regional governor, Veniamin Kondratyev, confirmed the attack, saying: “The area of the fire is more than 1,000 sq/m and emergency services are working at the scene.”

The refinery, which has a processing capacity of 12 million tons per year, has played a key role in supplying the Russian military with fuel and has been repeatedly targeted as Ukraine intensifies strikes on fossil fuel plants.

The refinery underwent a three-month shutdown after being struck in January 2024, only to again be hit shortly after resuming operations in May.

While Kyiv has remained tight-lipped about the latest strike, videos published on social media show a huge fire seemingly at the very center of the refinery.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a series of explosions occurring over the course of several minutes.

The attack on Tuapse comes just days after Ukraine launched its largest single drone assault on Russia.

The attack on Tuesday 11 came as part of a broader aerial assault that saw hundreds of drones launched at targets in Russia, killing three and injuring at least three more and causing delays at Moscow airports.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said that 337 unmanned aircraft were downed across the country, including 91 over the Moscow region and 126 in Kursk, a southwestern province partially occupied by Ukrainian forces. A further 38 were intercepted over the western Bryansk Oblast, the ministry added.
