Denmark ready to station troops in Ukraine, minister says

Denmark is prepared to send troops to support a European peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, the Danish Foreign Minister said on Monday.

Lars Lokke Rasmussen confirmed that if the “right conditions” arise between Russia and Ukraine, Denmark would be ready to assist.

He said: “If the right moment comes when a European presence is needed for a ceasefire or peace agreement, then Denmark is basically prepared.”

He added: “It is important that we in Europe send the right signals to both Putin and Washington, we are doing just that.”

The announcement followed a meeting with Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and the foreign affairs committee in the Danish parliament, signaling broad political support for the decision, including backing from opposition parties.

In response to concerns about the impact on Danish forces already stationed in Latvia as part of a NATO mission, Minister Poulsen assured that the contingent “will not be affected.”

“There are many different options,” he said, declining to elaborate.
