Polish airports and airline PLL LOT have canceled or redirected multiple flights to and from Germany due to a nationwide strike at German airports, affecting more than half a million passengers.
The strikes over wages started in Hamburg on Sunday and spread to 12 more locations the following day.
In total, more than 3,400 flights have been canceled, according to preliminary estimates from the ADV airport association, while many others have been redirected.
Airports at the Polish cities of Gdańsk, Rzeszów, Krakow, Katowice and Wrocław said they will use minor airports in Germany to off-load air traffic, while cancelling most flights.
Earlier, PLL LOT reported it will not fly to and from Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt on Monday and partially on Tuesday.
The strikes, called by the Verdi trade union, are set to last 24 hours until Monday midnight and affect most of the country’s main airports.
Verdi’s demands, which have so far been rejected, include an 8% wage increase and three additional days off.
A third round of negotiations to end the dispute is scheduled to take place in Potsdam from March 14 to 16.
