Wielgosz clinches gold in 800m race at European Athletics Indoor Championships

Poland’s Anna Wielgosz scooped a gold medal in the 800m race at the indoor championships in Apeldoorn, in the Netherlands.

Wielgosz, 31, cruised through the semifinals to join the top six best 800m runners in the European Athletics Indoor Championships final, on Sunday.

Wielgosz started the two-lap race slowly, placing at the end of the pack, but she gradually moved forward to head the field at the finishing line and clinch the 800m women’s crown.

The middle-distance runner crossed the finish line with a time of 2:02.09, just ahead of France’s Clara Liberman. Slovenia’s Anita Horvat finished third.

It is Wielgosz’s first gold medal in the history of her competing in the European Athletics Indoor Championships and the fourth Polish medal in Apeldoorn.

Poland is now in third place in the indoor championship medal table.
