Hurdler Jakub Szymański becomes European indoor champion

Poland’s Jakub Szymański became the European indoor champion after outclassing the competition in the men’s 60m hurdles in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, on Friday.

Szymański clocked a time of 7.43s, edging out France’s Wilhelm Belocian (7.45s), and Just Kwaou-Mathey (7.50s) just before the finish line.

Two years ago in Istanbul, the talented Pole took silver. This year, he came to Apeldoorn as a holder of the best result in 2025 in Europe and met the fans’ expectations.

Szymański, who also set the new Polish record earlier this year (7.39s) will now compete in Nankin in the World Indoor Championships on March 21-23, where he will look to challenge the Americans, a dominant nation in the hurdles’ competition.

Earlier on Friday, Pia Skrzyszowska won bronze in the same hurdles distance in women’s competition. The winner was Swiss Ditaji Kambundji, who also set a European record of 7.67s. Home representative Nadine Visser took silver, improving her own Dutch record to 7.72. Skrzyszowska clocked her season-best time of 7.83 seconds.

After two days of competition in Apeldoorn, the French are leading the medal table with four medals: gold, two silver and bronze. The Dutch are second, and the Poles are in third place with two medals.
