Poland analyses Airbus stakes but ‘must scale up fast’ domestic industry

Poland’s minister of state assets, Jakub Jaworowski, has called for a major boost in domestic arms production, framing it as essential for national security.

Jaworowski told TVP World’s ‘On the Record’ program that Poland’s current production capacity is insufficient, causing delays in critical defense projects.

Despite Poland’s status as a top NATO ally, spending over 4% of its GDP on defense, much of its military hardware still comes from foreign suppliers.

Jaworski continued that Poland must prioritize manufacturing large-caliber ammunition and advanced weaponry at home to equip its military before considering exports.

While open to European defense partnerships, Jaworowski emphasized Poland’s need to retain full control over its key defense companies.

He also addressed discussions about Poland potentially joining Airbus, the multinational aerospace and defense giant, saying: “We would need to establish with Airbus what kind of military systems we would be developing together.”

He added that acquiring a stake would require billions and that immediate defense needs should take precedence over long-term industrial ventures.

But with European defense budgets rising, Jaworowski warned that the next year will be pivotal, with numerous contracts likely to be signed.
