Russian authorities have chosen a bizarre way to express their gratitude to the mothers of soldiers killed in the war in Ukraine, gifting them meat grinders and flowers for International Women’s Day.
As part of the ‘Flowers for Mothers of Heroes’ campaign intended to coincide with Women’s Day, the ‘presents’ were sent out by the mayor of the northern city of Polyarnye Zori near the border with Finland, along with the local head of the ruling United Russia party and the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation.
The United Russia party wrote in a social media post that the gift was meant to support mothers of the fallen “not with words but with deeds.”
“Dear mothers, thank you for the strength of spirit and love you put into raising your children,” the party posted. “Their actions will remain forever in our memory, serving as an example of courage and patriotism to future generations.”
Pictures of mothers receiving the token of appreciation have circulated online, drawing criticism from internet users, much to the irritation of authorities.
“For us, the most important thing is that the women themselves are happy with the practical gifts, which will be useful in the household, especially as they were chosen according to their wishes and needs,” a party official wrote on the VKontakte social media platform.
The meat grinders are not the first peculiar gift received by relatives of Russian forces lost in the war.
Shortly after the start of the conflict, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov gave the families of deceased servicemen sacks of potatoes and onions, along with a bottle of oil.
