Ukrainian drones set a Russian oil refinery ablaze after targeting it in an overnight attack on March 4, according to Ukraine’s Center of Countering Disinformation.

The refinery in Syzran, Samara, 700km east of the Ukrainian border, is owned by Russian energy giant Rosneft and is a key facility for processing fuel.

Ukraine considers Russian oil infrastructure a legitimate military target, citing its role in supplying fuel for Moscow’s war effort.

Local residents reported explosions around 3 a.m., followed by a fire at the site.

Samara’s regional governor, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, acknowledged the attack but provided few details, referring only to an unnamed industrial facility in Syzran. He claimed Russian air defenses intercepted the drones and that no casualties were reported.

The Syzran refinery, with an annual processing capacity of 8.9 million tons of oil, produces fuel and aviation kerosene.

This is not the first time it has been targeted—a previous drone attack hit the facility on February 19.
