Mountains of surplus donuts found dumped behind a Warsaw shopping mall on Monday, have sparked outrage over food waste in the wake of last week’s Fat Thursday celebrations.
The discovery was made by members of several Facebook freeganism groups, who quickly shared photos of the discarded treats online.
The images, showing piles of uneaten donuts in various flavors, drew widespread outrage from social media users.
“I was there around 11 a.m.—a whole mountain of donuts, all different kinds. They definitely weren’t spoiled. It’s a shame they were thrown away instead of given to those in need,” one user commented.
Fat Thursday, a beloved Polish tradition marking the last indulgence before Lent, sees millions of donuts consumed across the country in a single day.
However, the waste left behind has raised concerns about consumerism and excess.
“My heart aches to see this—what’s left of Fat Thursday, in just one place in Warsaw. Stacks of donuts after our one-day madness,” another person said.
Some users pointed out labels on the discarded boxes, suggesting the baked goods may have come from a local pastry chain, though no company has claimed responsibility.
The incident has reignited discussion about food waste in Poland, with freeganism advocates urging businesses to donate surplus food rather than dispose of it.
Freeganism—a movement aimed at reducing food waste—encourages people to share excess food via social media and even salvage discarded but still-edible items through dumpster diving.
