A Lithuanian man attempting to row non-stop across the Pacific Ocean has been rescued by the Royal Australian Navy off the coast of Queensland.
Aurimas Mockus sent a distress signal on Friday night as Tropical Cyclone Alfred approached his boat.
He was being buffeted by huge waves and high winds when he called for help.
Mockus’s team announced that he was picked up by an Australian Navy vessel at 23:00 on Sunday, Lithuanian time.
He is being transported to shore aboard HMAS Choules and is expected to arrive in a day and a half, Lithuanian national broadcaster LRT reported.
The rower said he had not suffered any serious injuries.
Mockus, a member of Lithuania’s civil defense force and a seasoned outdoorsman, had sought to become only the fourth person to row solo across the Pacific without stopping.
He set off from San Diego last October for the 12,000 km voyage to Brisbane and was just days away from success when Alfred struck.
