World leaders react to Trump-Zelenskyy explosive Oval office row

In the aftermath of a heated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded by saying: “Dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone.”

Donald Tusk took to X swiftly after the dramatic exchange of words in the Oval Office, to express his backing for the Ukrainian president.
French President Emmanuel Macron clarified to reporters in Portugal his position, saying: “Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the aggressed people. I think we were all right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago, and to continue to do so. We, that is the United States of America, the Europeans, the Canadians, the Japanese and many others.

“And we must thank all those who have helped and respect those who have been fighting since the beginning. Because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, their children and the security of Europe. These are simple things, but they're good to remember at times like these, that's all.”

Trump’s former security advisor, John Bolton stated on X that “Trump and Vance have declared themselves to be on Russia's side.”. Johann Wadephul, deputy chairman of the CDU (Germany’s government in waiting) said on X that he was shocked by events in the Oval Office.

“The scenes from the White House are shocking. How can someone stab the president of an invaded country in the back like that? Free Europe will not betray Ukraine!”

Addressing Zelenskyy, Antonio Costa, the European Council’s president, said: “Your dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President Zelensky. We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace.”

President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen also offered words of support for Zelenskyy and Ukraine.

Friedrich Merz, the German conservative leader tipped to be next chancellor after winning Sunday’s election, wrote on X in English: “Dear Volodymyr, we stand with #Ukraine in good and in testing times.

“We must never confuse aggressor and victim in this terrible war. (FM)”

Following JD Vance’s accusations that Zelenskyy had not “said thank you once,” the Ukrainian leader posted on X: “Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit. Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.”
