A draft regulation extending the operation of the buffer zone on the border between Poland and Belarus by another 90 days, from March 10, has been prepared by the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs and issued for consultation.

According to the ministry, it is necessary to prolong the operation of the buffer zone as the migration pressure orchestrated by Belarus as part of its hybrid operations aimed at destabilizing Poland and other EU countries has not stopped.

The draft regulation establishes a temporary ban on entering the stretch of more than 78 kilometers along the Polish-Belarusian border, starting from March 10, 2025.

The restriction on entry does not apply to tourist areas and routes, in order to mitigate its economic effects on the local community, visitors and businesses operating in the area, the ministry wrote.

The previous government introduced the buffer zone in 2021 after Belarus decided to create migration pressure on the EU’s eastern borders in retaliation for sanctions that Brussels imposed on Minsk.

The Belarusian dictator, Alexander Lukashenko, invited thousands of mostly Middle Eastern and African migrants to his country under the false promise of easy access to the EU across the Polish and Lithuanian borders.

The existing border buffer zone was established on June 13, 2024, due to the increasing number of attacks by illegal immigrants against law enforcement officers patrolling Poland's border with Belarus.

Its operation was first prolonged by another 90 days on September 11, 2024, and again on December 10, 2024.
