A gun-loving former Croatian deputy prime minister who allegedly gave his son lessons in how to throw hand grenades was arrested on Wednesday after parliament lifted his immunity from prosecution.
Josip Dabro, a member of the ruling nationalist-populist Homeland Movement (DP), is accused of endangering his 12-year-old son by allowing him to shoot a pistol and an automatic rifle, as well as teaching him how to throw a grenade.
The MP, a former professional kickboxer, is also being investigated over allegations of illegal possession of weapons and explosives.
Croatian lawmakers voted to revoke Dabro’s immunity and approve his temporary detention. Following the move, Dabro said he would reconsider his support for the ruling coalition upon his return to parliament.
The government holds a wafer-thin majority of 76 seats in the 151-member assembly.
Dabro resigned as deputy prime minister and agriculture minister in January after a video surfaced showing him firing a pistol through the window of a moving car near a residential area.
After stepping down, he apologized, calling the incident a moment of thoughtlessness.
