Europe must be part of upcoming negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine, Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, said after meeting the president of the European Council, Antonio Costa, in Warsaw.

“We realize that the upcoming negotiations must involve Europe. Ukraine also expects as much, but at the moment a lot of issues are up in the air,” Tusk said on Tuesday.

He confirmed that European Union leaders will meet at an extraordinary summit on March 6 to discuss additional support for Ukraine, European security guarantees and how to pay for European defense needs.

"I have no doubt that strengthening Europe's unity in the face of Ukraine's situation and against Russia seems absolutely necessary right now," Tusk said.

He added that on Sunday, a group of European leaders will meet in London to discuss defense, which he noted was important for Poland because the country is responsible for defending the bloc’s eastern border.

Despite fraught relations with the United States amid fears that President Donald Trump is aligning with Moscow rather than with America’s EU allies, Tusk said that “regardless of difficulties, Europe is interested in strengthening cooperation with the United States."
