The Polish women’s team won the sprint at the Speed Skating World Cup event in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, central Poland, securing the top spot in this season’s overall standings.
The team, consisting of Andżelika Wójcik, Kaja Ziomek-Nogal and Karolina Bosiek, has been in excellent form, finishing in the top three in each World Cup competition this season.
Previously, the trio had finished second in Beijing and then second in Calgary before this weekend's event on home ice. On Sunday they clocked a time of 1:28.07, doing just enough to finish ahead of the Canadians (1:28.30) in second place and to take them to the top of the overall standings.
World Cup—women’s team sprint overall classification:
1. Poland – 168
2. Canada – 157
3. Kazakhstan – 126
Poland’s outstanding skater, Andżelika Wójcik, took third place in the 500m, meaning America’s Erin Jackson moves ahead of her in the overall standings with one event left of the season.
Everything will now come down to next week’s final event of the season, in Heerenveen, Netherlands, where Wójcik will need to significantly better Jackson’s result if she is to finish top.
World Cup—women’s 500 m:
1. Erin Jackson (USA) – 422
2. Andżelika Wójcik (Poland) – 412
3. Yukino Yoshida (Japan) – 392
In the men’s sprint, Polish skater Marek Kania came third in the 500m, finishing ahead of the usually unstoppable American Jordan Stolz, who finished an uncharacteristic fifth.
Stolz has been dominant in all three of his distances (500m, 1,000m and 1,500m) this season, with this weekend marking the first time he has finished outside the top three in any race in over a year.
Kania’s performance saw him climb to fourth in the overall rankings.
