President Donald Trump praised Poland’s defense spending in a meeting with President Andrzej Duda in Washington on Saturday.

This is the first in-person meeting of the two heads of state since Trump took office on January 20.

Duda and Trump met backstage the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

“President Trump met with President Andrzej Duda of Poland and reaffirmed our close alliance. President Trump also praised President Andrzej Duda for Poland’s commitment to increase their defense spending,” the White House’s X account posted after the meeting. Duda confirmed the U.S. intends to continue its commitment to NATO’s eastern flank.

“There is no fear that the American presence in Poland will decrease. We keep hearing that we are a reliable ally. America is investing in security,” he wrote on X.
Duda told Trump the U.S. presence in Poland and Central Europe should be boosted, Reuters news agency also reported.

Poland’s defense spending is the highest in NATO at 4.7% of GDP, more than double the alliance’s 2% target. This is over one percentage point higher than the U.S.

This is the third meeting of high-level Polish and American officials in the last two weeks.

On Friday, the foreign ministers met in Washington and the U.S. defense secretary visited Poland the week before and called the country a “model ally”.

Poland hosts around 10,000 U.S. military personnel and there are more than 100,000 U.S. military personnel deployed across Europe.
