The speed skating World Cup weekend in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, central Poland began in positive fashion for the Poles, with the country’s top two women claiming third and fourth spot in the 500m.
Kaja Ziomek-Nogal took third with a time of 38.31 seconds, just 0.03 seconds better than fourth-placed Andżelika Wójcik, who remains the leader in the overall World Cup standings.
Ziomek-Nogal's consistency this season has been a little overshadowed by Wójcik’s brilliant performances, despite winning the World Cup event in Beijing in December.
On Friday evening, Ziomek-Nogal skated the first 100 meters brilliantly, clocking a time of 10.32 seconds, which was faster than the other 20 competitors. In the end only American Erin Jackson (38.08) and Dutch skater Suzane Schulting (38.17) were quicker.
Jackson closed Wójcik’s lead overall to just two points, with skaters set to compete again on Sunday.
After this weekend’s event in Poland there will be just one more. The final event to decide the overall winner will take place on February 28 to March 2 in Heerenveen, Netherlands.
