A Polish farmer is considering legal action against Elon Musk’s SpaceX after debris from a Falcon rocket crashed onto his farmland.
Marek Fagasik from the village of Śliwno, western Poland, told Fakt newspaper he was exploring options for compensation from the U.S. company after the rocket debris left a crater in one of his fields.
He said: “I heard that the country responsible for launching such a rocket should cover the damages. After all, it’s private property.”
He added: “The money would certainly come in handy but I don’t know what the legal process is.
“It's good that it fell in winter and the losses are not that big. In late spring or if it was very wet, even cars would have a hard time getting there. And there would be losses in crops.”
The wreckage was discovered on Wednesday, February 19, when a passerby spotted the remains in Fagasik’s field.
It was the third known fragment from the same Falcon rocket to be found in the region following its launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California in early February.
Other locals have now also voiced concerns over the falling rockets. One named Tomasz said: "I wouldn’t want something like this falling on my field.
“It’s just fortunate that it landed in such a place and not somewhere where people were present.”
He continued: “We talk so much about ecology, but now we're going to have garbage falling from the sky?
“I have the impression that it is being swept under the carpet. Something is also supposed to fall tonight [Thursday] at 8:30 p.m.
“Should we consider whether to hide in the basement for safety?”
