The armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad has said it will release the body of a Polish-Israeli hostage on Thursday, the Israeli prime minister’s office announced.
Oded Lifshitz, an 84-year-old journalist and peace activist with Polish citizenship, was abducted on October 7, 2023, along with his wife Yocheved.
They were taken from the Kibbutz Nir Oz, of which they were co-founders. While Yocheved Lifshitz was released shortly afterwards, her husband died in captivity. The militant group said he was killed during Israeli strikes on Gaza, Reuters reported.
His body is one of four to be returned to Israel on Thursday as part of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas. A further six living hostages are to be freed on Saturday.
Oded Lifshitz was a volunteer with the 'Road to Recovery' organization, which transports sick Palestinian children to hospitals in Israel, the Israel Hayom newspaper reported.
