Barcelona returned to the top of La Liga on Monday evening with a 1-0 victory, inspired by their two Polish players, Wojciech Szczęsny and Robert Lewandowski.

The Catalans narrowly overcame Rayo Vallecano, with Szczęsny pulling off a number of impressive saves and Lewandowski scoring the only goal of the game.

Mid-way through the first half Iñigo Martínez was clumsily bundled over in the box by Abdul Mumin. The Polish captain stepped up in the 27th minute and performed his trademark stuttering run up and pause just before striking, keeping his eyes fixed on the keeper, who he sent the wrong way. Barca were made to fight hard for the three points for the remainder of the match. Rayo Vallecano are having a fine season, sitting in sixth place. They came to Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium off the back of three consecutive wins.

Despite bossing the possession and taking 14 shots, the visitors proved a tough nut to crack. The visitors were also a threat going forward but Szczęsny put up a strong resistance making four good stops to keep them at bay. The Polish keeper’s moment of the match came in the 36th minute when he pulled off an outstanding double save. He firstly flung out a palm low to his left to keep out Nteka’s deflected shot and then rapidly scrambled to his feet to smother the follow up from García.

Barca and Real Madrid are now level on 51 points, with the former leading the way due to their superior goal difference.

Lewandowski remains on course for the Pichichi, leading the scoring charts with 20 goals, ahead of Kylian Mbappé on 17.
