Polish co-produced ‘A Real Pain’ scooped prizes in two categories at the 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) on Sunday.

The BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay went to Jesse Eisenberg, who also directed the film and acted as one of its protagonists, David.

Kieran Culkin, known among others for his role in HBO’s ‘Succession,’ who starred as David’s cousin, Benji, won the award in Best Actor in a Supporting Role category.

The role already won him a Golden Globe Award in January and placed him as a contender for this year’s Oscars , while Eisenberg is, again, nominated in the best original screenplay category.

‘A Real Pain’

First shown at last year’s Sundance Film Festival in January, Eisenberg’s ‘A Real Pain’ tells the story of two childhood friends and cousins, David and Benji.

The U.S.-Polish coproduction follows the two as they try to reestablish a connection with one another and with their family’s roots following the death of their grandmother by going on a Jewish heritage tour across Poland.

Generational trauma, mental health, and ways of dealing with these issues are the underlying theme of the film.
