Google signed a memorandum of understanding with the Polish government on speeding up the adoption of artificial intelligence, the firm’s CEO Sundar Pichai said on Thursday after meeting Donald Tusk, Poland’s prime minister.

Poland is Google’s largest engineering hub, with offices in the cities of Warsaw, Kraków and Wrocław that employ more than 2,000 workers.

“We are excited to announce a new memorandum of understanding to use AI to drive economic growth and help transform sectors including cybersecurity, health and energy,” Pichai told a news conference.

He said Google was allocating $5 million for digital skills training in Poland over the next five years.

He added that generative artificial intelligence could increase Poland’s GDP by 8% in the coming decade, which translates to €50-55 billion.

Tusk said: “We talked about deregulation, about competitiveness. Google can also be part of this big, ambitious project, which is the deregulation of the economy and administration in Europe, and also in Poland.”

The meeting with Pichai came days after Tusk officially unveiled a major economic plan which includes the goal of investing more than €155 billion in Poland.

Convincing tech giants to do business in Poland is a key aspect of Tusk’s economic vision. He said on Tuesday that discussions were also being held with Microsoft, Amazon and IBM.
