Poland's superstar tennis player Iga Świątek has successfully launched her title defense bid in the Doha WTA 1000 tournament, comfortably beating Maria Sakkari 6:3, 6:2 to advance to the third round.
Świątek took just 83 minutes to cruise past her Greek rival on Monday. In the next round, she is due to play the winner of a match between the Czech Republic’s Linda Nosková and Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putnitseva.
The Pole has won the Qatari tournament three times in her career and will seek to retain her 1,000 ranking points by lifting the Doha tournament trophy for the fourth time.
Defending the title would be an important step for the 23-year-old Pole in her effort to reclaim the world number one ranking spot from Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka.
Sabalenka has 8,956 points in the Women's Tennis Association rankings, while Świątek has 8,770.
In her stellar career, Świątek has won five major titles – four French Opens and the U.S. Open. She is the first tennis player from Poland to win a major title.
The tournament's second round will feature a match between two Polish players, Magda Linette and Magdalena Fręch.
Linette, who is coming off a strong performance in the Abu Dhabi Open in which she reached the quarterfinals, dominated in her previous match with Fręch, dropping just three games to secure a win.
