Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, has raised almost €120,000 for one of the country’s largest annual charity drives by offering to host a breakfast at his office.
The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP) initiative is raising money to support pediatric oncology and hematology departments in public hospitals.
More than 120,000 volunteers in Poland and 23 other countries took part in an annual one-day public collection organized by the charity on January 26.
In a video published on the X platform, the prime minister thanked people who took part in an auction to ‘buy’ breakfast with him.
“Thanks for the big heart. The winner of this auction really deserved a delicious big Kashubian breakfast. I invite you to come. I'm happy,” Tusk said.
To help raise funds, the prime minister decided to offer a traditional meal from his own part of the country, the northwestern Kashubia region, which has a distinct language and culture.
This region has a unique cuisine which boasts, among other things, fried potato pancakes called “plince,” herrings with a local marinade, and “dziadówka,” a soup made from potatoes, onions, buttermilk and bacon.
The bidding for the breakfast with Tusk, which closed at 11 a.m. on Monday, was fierce until the end – with over €57,000 raised in the last minutes of the competition.
So far, the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity has raised over €42 million in this year’s drive. The final sum will be announced at the end of March.
Last year, after the dust from the finale settled, the reading came in at a record-breaking €67 million.
