Poland’s women's indoor hockey team has won its first-ever World Cup title, defeating Austria 1-0 in Sunday’s final in Poreč, Croatia.

Just three minutes into the game, Amelia Katerla seized a pass from captain Marlena Rybacha, scoring the lone goal that sealed Poland’s historic victory in the final.

Poland then relied on its strong defense, allowing only five goals across six matches—a remarkable achievement in indoor hockey.

Goalkeeper Marta Kucharska was one of the game’s standout performers, making crucial saves, including a penalty shot from Austria’s Marie Hahnenkamp just before halftime. Austria increased its pressure in the closing minutes, even pulling its goalkeeper for an extra attacker, but Poland held firm.

In the final 17 seconds, Austria won back-to-back penalty corners, but Poland’s defense successfully blocked both attempts. The Polish women’s national team had never won a medal at the World Cup, with its previous best finish being fifth place in 2011 and 2015.

Poland has also won four European Championship medals—two silver and two bronze.

In the men's tournament, Poland finished in fifth place.
