Poland has responded to Donald Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. should “take over” Gaza by saying that Warsaw has always supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
At a joint press conference with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, held on Tuesday, Trump said that Palestinians in the strip should be resettled in neighboring Arab countries. According to Trump's plan, Israel's neighbors would build homes for the Palestinian population to live there in “peace and harmony.”
Trump also suggested that the U.S. would “take over” Gaza, develop it and create “thousands and thousands of jobs.”
Asked about the idea by the private broadcaster Radio RMF FM on Wednesday, Andrzej Szejna, a deputy Polish foreign minister, said that Poland maintained its long-held position of supporting a two-state solution for Palestine and Israel that was in accordance with many United Nations' resolutions on that matter.
“Just like... when we say that no one can make decisions on Ukraine without Ukraine, if we talk about a peace process, one cannot decide about Palestine without Palestinians,” Szejna said.
“I want to, and I think the Polish government wants to, hear also the perspective not just of all the Gulf countries, but of Palestine and Palestinians themselves, with whom Poland maintains diplomatic relations,” he added.
