Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, has said there is reason to be cautious but not afraid in the face of current challenges and that his government is prepared for a wide range of scenarios.
In a social media video post on Saturday, Tusk listed an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that he will impose tariffs on EU countries, as well as intensified fighting in Ukraine, the ascendency across Europe of pro-Moscow movements, and illegal migration as reasons people are concerned.
“Yes, there is cause to be concerned,” he said. “But not to be afraid.”
He cited record economic growth in Poland, a strong and well-equipped army, sound foreign policy, and regaining control over the country’s borders as reasons for optimism.
“We have achieved authentic leadership in Europe and may soon have an independent, wise, strong, but friendly, president,” he said. “Everything is in our hands.”
His statement was an apparent reference to Poland’s adoption in January of the EU’s rotating presidency, and a forthcoming presidential election in Poland, scheduled for May.
Trump said on Friday he would “absolutely” impose tariffs on the EU as he announced levies of 25% on Mexico and Canada and 10% on China. He said tariffs wvould also be put on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, steel, copper, and aluminum.
Tusk said Poland was ready for a range of scenarios, “not with fear, but with caution,” and that 2025 must be “a breakthrough year, a Polish year.”
