The head of NATO's Military Committee, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, has said that each member country will have to “very quickly” reach a level of defense spending higher than 2%of GDP.
He stipulated that countries themselves must decide how and when they will achieve this goal according to their situation.
In an interview with Italian state press agency ANSA on Saturday, the Italian admiral said that some countries’ contributions to defense is “insufficient.”
“Separately you probably go faster, but together you can get further,” he said
“It is necessary to give up a little bit of national sovereignty, especially in the area of productive capacity, for the sake of the common good and to achieve a good result.”
The admiral will meet European leaders on Monday at an informal summit in Brussels to look together for opportunities to jointly finance defense projects.
