Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the U.S. on Monday, pledging to unite the nation and work as a “peacemaker and unifier”, while at the same time vowing to “build the strongest military the world has ever seen”.
Speaking at the Capitol Rotunda, Trump opened his inaugural address by telling supporters: “The golden age of America begins right now.”
Trump, who becomes only the second U.S. president to serve two non-consecutive terms, said that he was “confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success.”
He added: “Sunlight is pouring over the entire world, and America has the chance to seize the opportunity like never before.”
Referring to the attempted assassination attempt on his life, Trump said: “I was saved by God to make America great again.”
While he avoided any overt reference to the war in Ukraine, or his previous threats to withdraw the U.S. from NATO, the president hinted at reshaping America’s foreign policy.
Railing against the previous administration, Trump said: “We now have a government that cannot manage a simple crisis at home while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad.”

Railing against the previous administration, Trump said: “We now have a government that cannot manage a simple crisis at home while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad.”
He added: “We have a government that has given unlimited funding to the defense of foreign borders but refuses to defend American borders or, more importantly, its own people.”
Trump also vowed to “build the strongest military the world has ever seen” while also promising to act as an international peacekeeper.
“We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps, most importantly, by the wars we never get into,” he said. “My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier.”
Projecting a vision for a strong America respected by the world, Trump said: “Our power will stop all wars and bring a new spirit of unity to a world that has been angry, violent and totally unpredictable—we will not be intimidated. We will not be broken and we will not fail.”
Among other things, Trump slammed Panama for supposedly violating treaty agreements, accused China of “operating” the Panama Canal, and said that he would declare a national emergency on the Mexican border.
Referring to Panama he said: “American ships are being severely overcharged and not treated fairly in any way, shape or form, and that includes the United States Navy.
“And above all, China is operating the Panama Canal and we didn’t give it to China. We gave it to Panama. And we’re taking it back.”
In a fire-and-brimstone speech, Trump also said he would rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and would pursue plans to expand American territory and, even, plant the Stars and Stripes on Mars.
Describing his inauguration as “a liberation day”, Trump finished by saying: “The future is ours, and our golden age has just begun.”
Trump now becomes the oldest candidate to ever take the oath of office, with his election capping an unlikely political comeback - and marking the first time someone convicted of a felony has assumed the presidency.
