Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation have detained three former military commanders accused of negligence that allowed Russian forces to seize part of the Kharkiv region in May 2024.

Ukraine (SBU), a statement from the bureau said on Monday.

“Due to neglect of their military duties, the suspects allowed the armed forces of the Russian Federation to seize part of the country’s territory,” the bureau said, referring to the Lyptsi community in the Kharkiv district.

The commanders’ alleged failure to prepare defenses and maintain command during the Russian army’s offensive led to “personnel and equipment losses and weakened the effectiveness of the state border defense,” the bureau added.

The officers are accused of losing command capability and failing to secure border areas, which investigators say facilitated the Russian advance.

Russian forces launched an offensive in northeastern Ukraine in May 2024, intensifying the conflict in the region.

Fighting continues in parts of Kharkiv, which has seen some of the war’s heaviest battles.
