Customs officers at Warsaw’s main airport have detained a man on suspicion of smuggling after finding nearly €260,000 worth of jewelry hidden in his underwear.

Another man was also detained in the operation.

Officers at the capital’s Chopin Airport were alerted to the possibility that a crime was taking place by the suspicious behavior of a traveler from Dubai.

“One of the tourists, who arrived at Chopin Airport from Dubai, immediately went to the very end of the arrivals hall and entered the farthest toilet,” reported Dorota Beznosik-Majchrzak, a spokeswoman for the Mazovian National Revenue Administration (KAS), which foiled the operation.

The officers decided to investigate and discovered that another man was waiting for him at the toilet, waiting, apparently, to conduct a transition.

“Two watches of a well-known brand and jewelry were found in the underwear of one of them. In the other traveler's luggage, on the other hand, there were packages with cards, certificates of watch and jewelry manufacturers,” a customs officer spokesperson said.

The estimated losses to the Treasury from unpaid customs duty and value-added tax (VAT) would have amounted to more than €68,000.
