The “For Georgia” opposition party called for an immediate investigation into the “politically motivated attack” on its leader, Giorgi Gakharia, in a statement on Wednesday.
Georgia’s former prime minister and leader of the opposition party “For Georgia” was physically assaulted on Tuesday while attending court proceedings for party youth members facing charges of political persecution.
The attack at the Sheraton Hotel in the Black Sea resort of Batumi left Giorgi Gakharia with a fractured nasal bone and a concussion.
In a strongly worded statement, the “For Georgia” party described the attack as a “coordinated group assault orchestrated by Ivanishvili’s regime,” referring to Bidzina Ivanishvili, the billionaire founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
“This politically motivated attack is a blatant attempt to intimidate the opposition and suppress dissent,” the statement read.
“Such actions will never silence the voices fighting for Georgia’s democratic and European future.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the attackers but said that investigations are ongoing.
