An ambitious major airport and road-and-rail hub has been given the green light by the governor of Poland’s central Mazowieckie province.

The decision paves the way for the next phase of the €30 billion project, scheduled for completion in 2032.

The Central Transport Hub (CPK) will initially handle up to 34 million passengers a year, compared to the roughly 18.5 million passengers serviced in 2023 by Warsaw’s Chopin airport, currently Poland’s largest.

Initial plans for the CPK under the previous government had foreseen a capacity of 40 million air passengers a year.

The facility, to be built 40km west of the capital, will incorporate extensive road and high-speed rail links and has been touted by the prime minister as “the communication of the future.”

Now that the plans have been accepted by the province governor’s office, the consortium of 400 architects tasked with developing the hub can apply for a building permit.

“Gaining this decision is crucial for the CPK investment,” Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak was quoted by public broadcaster Polish Radio as saying. “As a result, the most modern airport in Central and Eastern Europe will be created.”

Construction of the hub is set to start in 2026.
