Speed climber Aleksandra Mirosław has been voted Poland’s sports personality of the year for 2024.
Mirosław was a favorite for the title, awarded for the 90th time by sports daily Przegląd Sportowy in conjunction with private TV broadcaster Polsat. She won Poland’s only gold medal at last year’s Paris Olympics, becoming the first ever Olympic champion in the event.
In a spectacular performance, the 30-year-old soldier and climber from Lublin broke her own world record twice in a matter of minutes, setting the new best time of 6.06 seconds for the 15-meter climb.
Predictions were proven true as Mirosław received the most votes from the Polish fans. Second in this year’s ranking of sports personalities was runner Natalia Bukowiecka (nee Kaczmarek), who took bronze in the women’s 400m in Paris. In third place was Cuban-born volleyball player Wilfredo Leon, a silver medalist at the Paris games.
Previous winners of the title have included national football hero Robert Lewandowski, international tennis ace Iga Świątek and ski jumping legend Adam Małysz.
