Iga Świątek notched up a record-breaking tenth singles victory at the United Cup in Australia after defeating Karolina Muchova, starting 2025 in a positive fashion.
The world number two’s victory on New Year’s Day gave the Polish national team its first victory in this season’s United Cup.
“Honestly, I love playing against Karolina because she always brings precision and intensity,” Świątek said post-match.
The Polish superstar, who experienced a difficult final few months of 2024, was starting to exude the type of confidence and self-belief that propelled to world number one.
After her singles victory, she teamed up with Poland’s top men’s player, Hubert Hurkacz, in the mixed doubles to book Poland’s place in the quarter finals of the tournament, WTA Tennis reported.
The United Cup is a relatively new tournament, having had its first final in 2023. It takes place across December and January. The international hard court tennis competition features teams from 18 countries, competing in singles and mixed doubles.
Poland will play their quarter final tie on Thursday but their opponent, at the time of writing, is yet to be decided.
