History enthusiasts in southeastern Poland have discovered a spearhead in the region’s Bieszczady mountains that archeologists believe may date back to Roman times.

The find was unearthed by a member of the ‘Galicja’ Historical-Exploratory Society, which has been scouring the region for years with the permission of local authorities.

The spearhead, measuring 23cm, was sent to the local conservator’s office. It is hoped the discovery will help shed light on the movements of people in the Bieszczady mountain region thousands of years ago.

The local forestry authority in nearby Krosno reported on its website that the spearhead will likely end up at a museum in nearby Sanok, where it may one day become an exhibit. .

The society member who found the spearhead also found a medieval dagger earlier in the year. .

A spokesperson for the group said late autumn is a good time to find relics as the forest sometimes gives up its secrets with the first frosts of winter.
