The Ukrainian president said union between the European Union and the United States was necessary to bring peace to Ukraine.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy was speaking on arrival at a summit of EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday.
“For us, it's very important, especially from the very beginning of next year; we need very much unity between the United States and EU and countries of Europe,” Zelenskyy said.
“We need this unity to achieve peace. I think only together—the United States and Europe—can really stop Putin and save Ukraine.”
U.S. policy towards the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is expected to change once president-elect Donald Trump returns to power in Washington in January. Trump has claimed he will bring the war to an end early in his presidency.
Some EU leaders, meanwhile, are looking to bolster their support for Ukraine in light of Trump’s return to power.
Protection of Ukraine's energy sector, an increase in Ukraine’s arms production and urgent help for the education system will be on the agenda during the visit to Brussels, Zelenskiy added.
