Poland’s Katarzyna Wasick secured the bronze medal in the 50m freestyle at the World Swimming Championship in Budapest, finishing in 23.37 seconds.
The event was dominated by Americans Gretchen Walsh, who set a world record with a blistering 22.83, and Kate Douglass, who took silver with 23.05. Walsh, 21, shaved 0.04 seconds off her own world record set in Saturday’s semifinals.
The 50m freestyle is Wasick’s signature event, having previously claimed silver in Melbourne in 2022 and bronze in Abu Dhabi in 2021.
In the 50m breaststroke final, fellow Pole Dominika Sztandera placed sixth with a time of 29.49. Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte won gold in 28.54, ahead of China’s Qianting Tang (28.86) and the United States’ Lilly King (28.91).
Wasick’s medal is Poland’s fifth bronze at this championship, joining podium finishes by Kacper Stokowski (100m backstroke), Krzysztof Chmielewski (200m butterfly), and two relay teams: the men’s 4x100m freestyle and the mixed 4x50m freestyle.
