North Korean soldiers killed eight Russian troops in an incident of “friendly fire”, according to Ukrainian intelligence.
The unverified claims allege that Pyongyang’s forces, who are supporting Moscow’s operations in Russia’s Kursk region, shot at members of the Akhmat unit during combat.
On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Russian military has now begun using North Korean forces in significant numbers, as it aims to win back territory held by Ukraine following its surprise incursion into Kursk in August.
"Today, we already have preliminary data that the Russians have begun to use North Korean soldiers in their assaults. A significant number of them," Zelenskiy said in his daily address on social media.

Kyiv estimates that around 11,000 North Koreans are at Russia's disposal in the region, and the president warned that they could be deployed on other fronts, too.
Ukraine’s military intelligence agency claimed that the alleged “friendly fire” incident was the result of a “language barrier” between different units, reported the Kyiv Independent website.
Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry said on Sunday that its military had taken control of the villiages of Veselyi Hai and Pushkino in Ukraine's Donetsk region. It also said they had attacked and destroyed four Patriot air defence systems. The claims, reported by the Reuters news agency, are yet to be verified.
