An Indian teenage chess player coached by Poles has become the youngest ever chess world champion.

Eighteen-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju beat defending champion Ding Liren of China in the World Chess Championship in Singapore on Thursday.

Dommaraju is four years younger than Garry Kasparov was when, at 22, he became the youngest world champion by beating Anatoly Karpov in 1985.

Dommaraju‘s official coach is Polish grandmaster Grzegorz Gajewski, who is accompanying him in Singapore.

The new world champion also revealed the names of other seconds, coaches and partners. They include three other Poles: Radosław Wojtaszek, Jan-Krzysztof Duda (his sparring partner) and Jan Klimkowski.

"I can't express my gratitude enough to them," Dommaraju said.

The teenage prodigy netted $1.35 million from his win in Singapore.

Dommaraju comes from Chennai (formerly known as Madras), also the hometown of the most famous Indian chess player, former world champion Viswanathan Anand. Dommaraju learned the rules of the game at the age of seven.
