Four pro-European parties and a group representing national minorities have agreed to form a parliamentary majority in Romania, amid tensions following the annulment of November’s presidential elections last week over allegations of Russian meddling.

The coalition includes the center-left Social Democratic Party (PSD), the center-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the centrist Save Romania Union (USR), the center-right Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) and a group of deputies representing national minorities.

In a statement after the talks, the coalition said: “In the coming days, the four parties and representatives of national minorities will work on a joint governance program.”

“A concrete plan for efficiency and the reduction of public spending and bureaucracy in public administration is needed.

“Pro-European parties aim to build trust in institutions and the political class through good governance, transparency in public spending and respect for citizens,” the coalition said.

The parties also pledged a joint presidential candidate in future elections.

Analysts call the coalition a "cordon sanitaire," aimed at limiting the influence of far-right parties that control over 30% of parliament.
