A Polish teenager has made sporting history as the first Polish badminton player to win the European Junior Championship.
Mateusz Golas, 17, smashed his way to victory on the Spanish island of Ibiza on Thursday, beating France’s Arthur Tatranov in straight sets, 21-19, 21-16.
Underlining his reputation as a rising star of badminton, during the whole tournament Golas only conceded one point.
That was to Portugal’s Tiago Berenguer during the semi-finals.
Ranked 10th in the junior world standings, Golas is also the youngest-ever winner of Poland’s senior national championship.
In October, he was the only European player to reach the round of 16 at the junior world championships in China.
