The European Union’s top diplomat condemned a sabotage attack on a key water canal in Kosovo that supplies power plants and drinking water to much of the country.

The attack on Friday night damaged a canal feeding water to two coal-fired power plants near the town of Zubin Potok, which are major sources of electricity for Kosovo.

“This was an act of sabotage targeting critical civilian infrastructure in Kosovo that supplies drinking water to a significant part of the population,” EU High Representative Josep Borrell said in a statement on Saturday.

The canal also supplies drinking water to northern Kosovo and the capital, Pristina.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti blamed Serbia for the attack, saying he was “convinced that Belgrade is behind the organization of this attack.” Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić denied the accusation.

The French Foreign Ministry also condemned the attack, saying it could have “serious consequences for Kosovo” and called for an investigation.

Kosovo’s National Security Council met on Saturday to discuss the incident and vowed to take measures to mitigate the consequences and protect critical infrastructure.
