A 12-year-old Polish chess prodigy has made headlines by clinching the silver medal at the FIDE World Cadet Chess Championships 2024 in Italy.
Representing his local UKS Pionier Jastrzębie-Zdrój chess club, 12th seeded Antoni Radzimski stunned fellow competitors by finishing with a whopping 8.5 points out of 11, securing seven wins, three draws and just one loss to become the vice-world champion.
The tournament, held from November 14–27 in the coastal city of Montesilvano, brought together 151 of the best young players from around the globe.
Posting on social media, president of the Polish Chess Society, Radosław Jedynak, said: “Everything went according to plan and @antek_radzimski wins a silver medal at the World Junior Championships under 12.
“He wins the most valuable medal in his career so far and it should be remembered that he is also the current bronze medalist of the European Championships in the same age category.
“There are still many years to win his first gold in the world.”
The most recent win is the latest in a string of successes for the 12-year-old. Earlier this year he took bronze at the World Rapid Chess Championship, a silver at the European Blitz Chess Championship and another bronze in classical chess.
He also contributed to a team victory for Poland.
Commenting on the boy’s spectacular silver in Italy, UKS Pionier Jastrzębie-Zdrój said: “Among the entire 22-member Polish national team, Antoni was the only one to return with a trophy.”
