At least two Poles are feared to be among the dozens missing after a tourist ship capsized in shark-infested waters off the coast of Egypt, the Polish Ministry of Foreign affairs (MFA) has said.

The Sea Story vessel was carrying 45 people, including 31 tourists of varying nationalities and 14 crew, on a multi-day diving trip when it went down near the coastal town of Marsa Alam in the Red Sea.

Reports say that 16 people have so far been rescued but searches are continuing for 29 others with the help of the Egyptian navy and army.

MFA spokesman Paweł Wroński told the Polish Press Agency: “For now, we have information that two tourists may have had Polish citizenship, that's all we know about them, that's all we can say for now.”

According to Egyptian officials, a distress call was received at 5:30 a.m. local time after the boat had departed from Port Ghalib in Marsa Alam on Sunday, with plans to return to Hurghada Marina on November 29.
