Russian naval activity off the Portuguese coast is intensifying, with a spy ship among several vessels recently passing through Portugal’s maritime territory, the country’s navy chief has said.
Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo told a press conference on Sunday that “there is a transit of Russian Federation ships in our waters—an increasingly intense transit, from North to South and from South to North.”
The admiral added that recent activity included three warships (two frigates and a corvette), two refueling ships, three scientific research ships and “a ship that carries out espionage, normally electronic espionage.”
“Our response to that is to follow them, control them, keep them under constant pressure with our constant presence,” he said.
