‘Extensive evidence’ of Russian interference in Moldovan election, says former diplomat

A former Romanian diplomat has told TVP World that Moldova’s election was riddled with Russian interference, despite the pro-Western incumbent Maia Sandu taking victory from her pro-Kremlin opponent.

Speaking on Monday, Eusebiu Slavitescu said: “There is extensive evidence of voting buyout, voters traveling from one polling station to another.

“As we have seen yesterday (...) lots of planes [were] flying from Russia, Turkey to Baku to Minsk in order to bring these voters to vote for the pro-Russian candidate.”

He added, however, that Russia’s primary aim of leveraging power and influence in Moldova will be in next year’s parliamentary election, in July.
