The facial likeness of a leading figure of Czech history, the Hussite warrior and general Jan Žižka, has been digitally recreated to mark 600 years since he died.

The team that brought the national hero’s image back from the grave was led by Brazilian 3D facial reconstruction expert Cícer Moraes.

The team applied methods usually used by criminologists and doctors, and based its model on statistical analysis of scans of living people and digital models of skulls from archaeological excavations around the world.

As part of their work, they used a digital model of Žižka’s cranium created in 2014 from a skull fragment believed to have come from the Bohemian nobleman.

The fragment was discovered in 1910 during reconstruction of a church in the Bohemian town of Čáslav.

The experts who carried out the work have previously re-imagined Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible and Egyptian Pharoah Ramesses II, Radio Prague International reported.

The anniversary of the death of Žižka fell on October 11.
