A Chinese mercenary fighting for Russia has claimed that eight North Korean officers were killed during their first day of deployment in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian newspaper Kyiv Post reported that a social media user by the name of “Dian Yuzhan” made the claim during a live broadcast with another Chinese mercenary, who had reportedly returned home after fighting for Russia.
The newspaper added that it could not verify if the claims made in the video, shared by X user whyyoutouzhele, were true.
"We have North Korean soldiers here, goddamn it, they were gone just after entering [the war]… and [people say] they are fierce… Just entered and gone. Just one day. Eight people, even officers,” the mercenary said, laughing during the broadcast.
He also mentioned the deaths of 153 Chinese nationals fighting on the Luhansk front but did not provide details on the date or location of the incident involving the North Koreans.
At one point, “Dian Yuzhan" was asked if his units had problems with deserters. He said they were shot on sight.
Earlier in the video, a second mercenary criticized the poor leadership within Russia's military, describing failures in command as common. "Commanders' failure is a norm," he said.
He also criticized the lack of compensation for soldiers killed in battle, explaining that some mercenaries were not compensated because they could not be identified.
