Poland’s most expensive single-story apartment is back on the market with interested parties even including the world’s richest man, Elon Musk.

Found on the 50th floor of Warsaw’s Złota 44 building, apartment 504 became Poland’s priciest single-story apartment when it was purchased by businessman Rafał Zaorski in 2022 for 22.9 million złoty. Now, the 485 sq/m property is back up for sale for a starting price of 38 million złoty.

According to reports, however, the apartment is set to fetch far beyond the listed price with two Polish billionaires locked in a bidding war for the prestigious space.

Musk, however, appears to be out of the running after withdrawing his interest due to building regulations forbidding ‘office activity’ from being conducted inside the address.

For residents living at Złota 44, Zaorski’s exit is likely to have been welcomed. Zaorski, a cryptocurrency speculator who originally made his fortune in IT, first listed the apartment last November, but rejected two bids of 45 and 51 million złoty.

“Such a sale would have been too boring for me,” he said at the time, adding that “the view is too beautiful to be enjoyed by just one jaded speculator.” Instead, Zaorski sold 20,000 ‘virtual keys’ for 5,000 złoty a piece in what was marketed as a cross between “a social experiment and an epic flip”. With the apartment capable of holding 300 people at a time, Zaorski’s scheme envisaged keyholders creating a flat-sharing timetable.

Unsurprisingly, the project was slammed by both residents and the building’s management. Kicked-out of a Whatsapp group for tenants, Zaorski later revealed that one fuming resident had even threatened to “leave him in a forest”.

The scheme would have netted Zaorski 100 million złoty had it been successful, but instead it was ultimately blocked by the Złota 44 Housing Committe before finally being shelved over summer.

The tower was designed by the Polish-born ‘starchitect’ Daniel Liebeskind and was officially opened in 2017, nine years after construction first began.

Featuring a 24-meter pool, wine cellar, cinema, spa, and observation deck, the 192-meter-tall building is reportedly the tallest residential building in Europe, with residents including football superstar Robert Lewandowski.

Earlier on Tuesday, 30 residents were evacuated after a fire broke out in the sauna. The cause of the blaze is now being investigated by the police.
